Seasons Change, and So Do My Edits
Just a fun walk down memory lane, looking back at how my style has evolved, for better or worse, over the last 10 years. I think we wound down taking official clients in 2017 and since then, I’ve been shooting select sessions and collabs with other photographers. Recently, I had a student asked if I had presets or actions I used. If you know me, you know how much I love to educate – so I’m working on a download link for some of the presets I’ve created along the way. It also got me thinking about how my style has changed over the years and how these custom presets I’ve made have change.
Early on, I didn’t understand color all that well. I struggled with capturing greens. I still love explosive, clean colors, but toned some. I’ve also carried on a strong affinity for warm to overly warm images. Just a preference of style. On this Christmas edit, you’ll noticed the greens a calmed as well as the reds. I only had the jpg to do this edit, and my preset blew out some portions of the skin that I’d normally not blow out. Since it’s for a blog post, I’m not going to spend the time recovering. You get the gist.
Early on in my photography adventure, I frowned upon landscape photographers. Maybe frowned is too strong. I just thought, Hey, it’s a mountain. A train. You don’t have to worry about posing it! I couldn’t have been more wrong in that thinking. Proper landscape photography is the last thing from trivial. I’ve learned to love, and respect it. It really is an art form. Here’s a quick edit I did. Maybe a little too edited, but again, reflects on my recent styling.
Still love me some sun kissed photos – that hasn’t changed. What has changed is how I view the subject in their setting. I try to incorporate the background and showcase it, while preserving isolation of the subject. When I started shooting back all those years ago, I was part of the Nifty-Fifty “Jasmine*” cult. Shoot everything at 1.2, blow out the sky, cream the skin and bokeh the crap out of the background. I think I’m a meet me in the middle kind of shooter now.
